Murphy’s Law and the Paper Towel Paradox: A Lesson in Playing the Whole Tape

The day before yesterday, I had one of those oh-no moments. 😳 I was in a public restroom, finished handling my business, and only then did I realize—no toilet paper. 🚽🚫 Not a single square. No extra roll in sight.

Now, if you’ve ever been in this situation, you know the sinking feeling that follows. 😩 You sit there, frozen in time, replaying every decision that led to this moment. Could I have checked first? Yes. Should I have checked first? Absolutely. But I didn’t.

Fast forward to the next day. I’m pulling laundry out of the washer, feeling accomplished… until I see it. 😧 My freshly cleaned clothes are covered in tiny bits of shredded paper towel. 🧻💥 The kind of mess that makes you question every choice you’ve ever made. And in that moment, I had just one thought:

“Where was this paper towel when I actually needed it?! And now that I don’t—it’s EVERYWHERE!” 🤦🏾‍♀️

Murphy’s Law at its finest.

But the truth is, this wasn’t bad luck. 🍀❌ This wasn’t the universe playing games with me. This was me. I was the common denominator in both situations. I was the one who didn’t check for toilet paper when it mattered, and I was the one who didn’t check my pockets before tossing my clothes in the wash.

It would be easy to blame the world, to shake my fist at the injustice of it all. ✊🏾😤 But really, these little moments are just reminders of something bigger: so much of life is within our control—if we’re paying attention. 👀

This is why it’s worth it to play the whole tape forward before making a move. ▶️ Thinking ahead. Checking the details. Taking a beat to make sure we’re not setting ourselves up for unnecessary frustration.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about making life easier for future me—the one who doesn’t want to be stranded in a stall 🚽😬 or picking shredded paper towel off every inch of her laundry. 🧺🤯

Some problems are unavoidable, but a lot of them? They’re just tiny lessons in personal responsibility. ✨ So next time, I’ll check the stall first. And I’ll check my pockets before I wash my clothes.

Because life is hard enough—why make it harder on ourselves? 🤷🏾‍♀️💡
