You know the saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” 📅 It’s a phrase drilled into us from an early age, urging us to map out our futures, set goals, and stay on course. And then there’s the other one—the one that always makes me chuckle—”When we make plans, God laughs.” 😂 Both hold truth, but the space between them is where real life happens.
Recently, I had to move—alone. 🚛 I planned everything meticulously, knowing that a smooth transition would depend on a well-thought-out strategy. I accounted for every detail, expecting a controlled and seamless process. But as life often does, it reminded me that no plan is foolproof, especially when the execution relies on others. 🙃 Things didn’t go according to my script, timelines shifted, and obstacles appeared where I least expected them. At one point, I had to pause and ask myself: Do I fight against this, or do I flow with it? 🌊
That’s when I realized something profound: my true plan—whether I recognized it or not—was to remain flexible. 🤸🏾♀️ Flexibility was what saved me from spiraling into frustration. It was the quiet force that allowed me to move through the chaos with as much grace as possible. And in the end, despite all the disruptions, everything worked out. It always does. ✨
I’ve never been someone who believes that every minute of my life needs to be structured down to the last detail. ⏳ I do, however, have general plans. I think about what I need to accomplish today, this week, and how I want to prepare for the future. I want to be responsible, ensuring that I don’t burden anyone and that certain affairs—like my end-of-life arrangements—are in order. But beyond that, my real focus is on the present. On living moment by moment. 🧘🏾♀️
Because here’s the thing: moments are what make up our experiences, and those experiences are what shape our lives. ✨ When we spend too much time gripping tightly onto plans, we risk missing the beauty of what’s happening right in front of us. We trade presence for control, peace for rigidity.
There’s so much relief in accepting that we don’t have to have everything mapped out. 🛤️ Odds are, even the most detailed five-year plan will undergo unexpected changes. Life will shift, circumstances will evolve, and new opportunities will arise. The ability to bend, rather than break, is what keeps us moving forward with less stress and more peace. ☮️
So if you ever find yourself overwhelmed with planning or worrying about how things should go, remind yourself: flexibility is a plan too. And often, it’s the one that works best. 😉
